When buildings no longer meet standards in terms of style and technology, the normal consequence is still demolition and new construction. Yet the construction sector now accounts for 40 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, while at the same time producing extremely high amounts of construction waste, most of which ends up in landfills.
Through tiles and glazes derived from construction industry waste, Urban Glaze draws focus to the management of these resources. It is a rather speculative, paradigmatic approach, because when the tiles appear on the façade of a new building, demolition and new construction have long since taken place, only in a trace of material does the previous building remain in memory. The value of the past over the new and the way we deal with our legacies is thus brought into consciousness.
